Releasing and Box Office Spectaculars are proud to present the North American DVD premiere of Italian horror maestro Lucio Fulci's ultra-violent classic
CAT IN THE BRAIN
Announced for March 31 2009; 2 disc SE
Composite gorefest put together by the late maestro in which some
find a compelling post-post modern commentary on the gialli, Italian exploitation, the history of practice and horror, and Lucio Fulci.
Other see it as the ultimate hack rip-off and example of him showing contempt for his longtime fans. I'm more in the former categorgy. It's a damn funny send up of the entire Italian exploitation machine and demonstrates why it finally broke down in the late 1980s.
Check out this item about cats and schizophrenia below and think about the opening credits where that "cat" is seen chewing on Fulci's brain matter:
Dr. E. Fuller Torrey posits that cats may carry infectious diseases that could cause schizophrenia and bipolar
disorder. Torrey thinks they may be passing along Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite in cat feces, that causes brain lesions in humans and, if he's right,
schizophrenia.* [Dr.Douglas.com]
Maybe that's what drove Fulci to the brink, at least the movie Fulci. In any case, Wes Craven didn't hesitate to borrow this conceit for one
of his SCREAM epics. But CINB is the real thing, at least in terms of personal filmmaking with a perverted twist. Fulci wants us to laugh at him and with him.
The villains are film producers and psychiatrists. That's just about right.
